Are you aware of any dwarf children who are available for adoption, or a baby-yet-to-be-born to parents who have discovered they will have a dwarf child and wish to put the child up for adoption? We have completed our home study and are looking for a dwarf child, boy or girl, newborn to age 8. We are both little people (dwarfs) and feel we have much to offer a dwarf child. We are eager to provide a loving home for a short-stature son or daughter. Our home study was conducted by Mary Wood of Rainbow Adoption Services - Council of 3 Rivers American Indian Center, Inc. in Dorseyville, PA. The agency phone # is 412/782-4457 and their fax # is 412/767-4808.

Has any more work been done on "Advertising Aphrodisiacs" that appeared in
your first issue? The Internet article refers to a series of articles. I am
very interested in the topic and was hoping to pursue it this fall.

I had received a request from a person for more info about my article on Charles Dickens. She found it on The Ambassadors web site. I searched the issues of The Ambassador and could not find it! It is hidden away somewhere. I thought at the time how it would be to have an index of previous articles and writers that would take one directly to the issue and even page. How about that?

The Chromosomal Variation in Man Online database is now publicly accessible at www.wiley.com/borgaonkar . My collaborator is Dr. John Hardy, Ph.D. who is well known in the area of neurogenetics and is interested in collaborating with scientists, neurologists, physicians who may have access to patient(s)/families with neurologic disorders for further genetic studies.

My research group, based in London, U.K., is primarily concerned with understanding the molecular basis of neurodegenerative diseases, in particular the hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs). In a study performed in collaboration with Prof Victor McKusick, my group has recently identified the gene for Troyer syndrome, which as you know is a recessive form of HSP that occurs with high frequency amongst the Amish in the U.S. This finding is proving of great importance as it appears to have revealed a new mechanism that may be responsible for a wide range of neurodegenerative diseases. A number of Troyer-like conditions have been published over the years. All colleagues who have patients with Troyer Syndrome, please contact me.

I am sending you from the largest NGO's in the Middle East, with headquarters in Cairo, Egypt known for its so many social /community/and medical programs. Recently, our society has received a generous contribution, an 8-acres of land in Ahmad Orabi community. We are also researching how we can construct a project for the mentally handicapped and youth with special needs. Where and how can we find technical support?

LETTERS FROM THE EDITOR

To HE Prof. M. Awad Taag Eldin, Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population: I would like to congratulate your staff for their excellent work done in the new community genetic counseling clinics. During my last visit in October 2002 to both Um El Atibae Hospital in Giza and Samouha Clinic in Alexandria I noticed the tremendous effort done by their staff. The genetic counseling course organized by the MOHP and Prof. Suzanne Rushdi, was held in her non-profit organization headquarters was a unique one indeed. I enjoyed hearing and meeting her with Prof. Samia Kotb, Asma Kholeif, Bayoumy Ghareeb, Hisham Kandeel, and Rasha El-Kharadly. Special thanks to Dr. Ibrahim El-Nekhely and his colleagues Dr. Randa Kamal and Ahmad El-Gamal for their efforts in organizing these meetings.

Condolences: As the 50th anniversary of graduation of the first class from Ain Shams Medical College (Cairo, Egypt) is underway, I was saddened to learn of the passing of three sincere classmates. Prof. Fawzi Gadalla (Al-Azhar University), HE Prof. Maher Mahran (Former Minister of Population, Egypt) and Dr. Sayed Nasr (Sabah Hospital, Kuwait). My condolences to their grieving families, students, patients and friends.
