I am very pleased with the article on PPA that you have featured in the
"Selected Studies" in the January 2003 issue of Ambassadors magazine,
and your interest in our scholarly scientific organization. I have received many
favorable comments from PPA officers and members about the article on the
Paleopathology Association published in your January 2003 issue of Ambassadors
magazine. I must say that I was amused by the photograph that you selected of me - it
was taken last May on the campus of Lehigh University in Bethlehem,
Pennsylvania, when my husband and I were attending the annual Bach Choir of
Bethlehem festival. The rather odd-looking structure immediately behind me is
a bronze sculpture by a local artist, a graduate of Lehigh U - it reproduced
the form of a termite mound from South Africa! He currently had an exhibition
of several of these strangely beautiful sculptures, as well as several that
copied the root systems of trees, and they all looked very unusual against the
manicured lawns and Neo-Gothic buildings at Lehigh.

I am a teacher working in Dubai. I wish to inform you about a DUBAI-cat with uncanny skills. The three year old male Persian cat "CutyBoy" can count, identify objects, understand many languages and has many other skills. The cat has been featured in many periodicals, including the American Online Magazine (www.catsinthenews.com) in the spring edition under the title "cat knows math in eight languages, answers with kisses." You can read about CutyBoy at his web site www.geocities.com/cuty_boy_2k.

Many thanks for having published the review of my book. I have written an article called "Did Americans and Russians fly to the Moon, or were all so-called "Moon flights" faked?"

I think I could find reliable proofs of why American and Russian flights to the Moon never took place. My arguments are not based on the analysis of photos (a photo provided in the article just supports them), they are of a different nature.

I don't affirm categorically that Americans and Russians never flied to the Moon. I just affirm that it was impossible with the technology level reached in those times and even now. Maybe we reached a different, more advanced level?

American tanks are now ripping at the heart of Mesopotamia, the "land between the rivers" and the cradle of civilization. For 280 million Arabs, the symbolic effect of the tanks in the country is as devastating as a lethal sandstorm.

I have a cosmological theory that weaves a thread through everything from space to cognition, a egalitarian theory that begins with the premise that governments need people more than people need governments, and a discussion that disputes the soundness of Plato's Philosopher King.

I am currently working with the Liverpool Yemeni Arabic club to create a visual and auditory exhibition on traditional Yemeni folk stories. I am having difficulty with my research and was wondering if you can help by suggesting books which contain Yemeni folk stories or by forwarding any transcripts of stories in English and or Arabic which you might have access to.

The International Forum on Ecosystem Approaches to Human Health was held at Université du Québec à Montréal in May 2003. It was the first forum of its kind in the world and organized by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in collaboration with several national and international partners which attracted more than 400 delegates. The forum included more than 150 excellent presentations from Europe, Africa, Asia, North and South America, and the Middle East.

The forum will bring together scientists, policymakers, and representatives of civil society from all over the world, united in their firm belief that there is no frontier between people's well-being and the health of their environment. The proponents of this type of approach, which we also call eco-health, will draw upon their experiences, their results, and their investigations to shed light on the current debate over health and the environment.

I read with interest what was written in the Ambassadors magazine about treatment with honey and bee stings. A book written by Eng. Shehata Abdelfattah, published by the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture in 2001 called Honey and its Uses  mentioned its use in the treatment of gout, rheumatic fever, neuritis, and spondiylitis. It also talks about studies on its use for AIDS medication.

Letters from the Chief Editor

"Cutyboy the Persian Dubai Cat" - This is in response to the letter sent to The Ambassadors by a teacher in Dubai regarding the genius cat which apparently masters math in 8 languages and answers questions through kisses. The proud owner has delivered her kitty to Sahadevan Panicker, a mathematician at the Gulf Modern School in Dubai, in order to have him tested. "I don't know how that animal does it but he certainly has some peculiar gift with mathematics. I spent just 10 minutes testing him with algebra, geometry, Pythagoras and square roots and he was right every time!" On top of all of that, Cuty insists on being called Hema's youngest son and through sign language he claims to be no ordinary cat but a 'human cat'." Interestingly, Cutyboy even has his own website which can be seen at http://www.geocities.com/cuty_boy_2k/, Is this cat programmed before birth? Or does life change the program? I am personally very skeptical of the story of  the allegedly genius cat, since it lacks scientific evidence. Right now it remains a fictitious story until the cat is assessed critically in an academic veterinary center.

"A letter from India"

In response to the Indian journalist, Nabanita Dutt's, regarding the submission of the following four articles for publication in The Ambassadors Magazine about India, Thailand and Japan:

  2. "Eunuchs: India's Third Gender",

  3. "Temple Prostitutes of India", and

  4. "Irezumi: Body Art Japan is Embarrassed About"

Your articles will be sent to a reviewer and we will inform you of their opinion..

Congratulations:

To Prof. Abdel Moneim Abdel Aal, MD, FRCP(Edin), head of the dermatology & andrology department at Al-Azhar University for his excellent scientific achievements which led to his election as a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh. Thank you:

Special thanks to  H.E. Prof. Ali Abdel Fattah, former Egyptian Minister of Health and Dean of Ain Shams Medical College for his invitation to the 1953 alumni from Cairo, Alexandria, and Ain Shams Medical Colleges. I enjoyed attending this celebration which was held in January 2003, and more than 100 doctors and their families attended this well-organized social event. Prof. Abdel Fattah is the founder of a new non-profit organization that cares for children with special needs.
The memoirs of all his colleagues will be published in a new book entitled, "Khamseen Sana Tib" (50 Years of Medicine), edited by Dr. Mahmoud El-Banna.

Condolences:

He is one of Edinburgh's renowned physicians. He was editor of three editions of the authoritative book, "The Companion to Psychiatric Studies" with Prof. Andrew Zealley. Our condolences to his wife Dr. Anne, his family, colleagues and students.
